Lesbian herstory month at LILAC
Kia ora

Welcome to another LILAC newsletter letting you know about our October events and lesbian herstory month.

Like the rest of New Zealand we were thrown by the recent COVID-19 lockdown, but we’re back on track to offer an exciting month of activities in the LILAC Lounge (noting that COVID alert level rules must be followed).

We’re mindful that the LILAC Lounge is a small space and we’ll need to limit numbers if we’re still in alert level 2. To help us with our planning, please RSVP using the links below for each event you plan to attend – numbers in the room will be limited if we are still at Level 2. We’ll provide more information about this in the next few days.

Wednesday 6 October: Wellington’s historic lesbian events and sites

Come and see the fascinating Wellington map prepared by local die-hard dykes from decades past. You’ll be reminded of your favourite haunts or just wish you’d been out back then!

6.30pm start, and koha entry. Drinks and nibbles provided from 6pm (pending COVID alert level).

RSVP to lilac@lesbian.net.nz if you wish to attend.

Wednesday 13 October: Circle magazine and early lesbian publishing

Remember the Circle magazine? Put this date in your diary to hear Valda Edyvane and others lead us on an interesting look back at this exciting time in our local lesbian herstory. More information to follow in a further newsletter.

6.30pm start, and koha entry. Refreshments available from 6pm (pending COVID alert level).

RSVP to lilac@lesbian.net.nz if you wish to attend.

Wednesday 20 October: LILAC Book Group relaunch

We are very pleased to announce that LILAC’s much missed book club will start up again on Wednesday 20 October. Join us and enjoy guest author and poet Angele Toomey’s presentation of her new book Harbour (inspired by her daily commute beside Wellington’s beautiful and ever-changing harbour).

6.30pm start, refreshments available from 6pm (pending COVID alert level).

RSVP to lilac@lesbian.net.nz if you wish to attend.

Wednesday 27 October: lesbian representation in sport

There’s been a huge softening in approach and acceptance of women in many sports… but what about lesbian women? Come and hear from lesbians who have been active and out in the sports field talk about their battles and triumphs. And in the spirit of competition, be prepared for a fun quick quiz to top off a fascinating evening.

6.30pm start, and koha entry. Refreshments available from 6pm (pending COVID alert level).

RSVP to lilac@lesbian.net.nz if you wish to attend.

Tuesday’s at the LILAC Lounge

With a full month of events in October, the AGM in November, and some ongoing uncertainty brought about by COVID-19, Tuesdays at the LILAC Lounge are temporarily suspended. We’ll put this to the AGM in November and ask members how they’d like to see the LILAC Lounge being used.

LILAC’s Annual General Meeting - Tuesday 16 November

Put this date in your diaries, and head on down to the LILAC Lounge to support the AGM. Bring your ideas and enthusiasm, and be prepared to take part in discussion about how LILAC can better serve its members. More information out soon, including the Annual Report followed by the Financial Report.

LILAC gratefully acknowledges the invaluable financial support we receive from the Armstrong and Arthur Charitable Trust for Lesbians.

The A&A Trust  commemorates the support of Bette Armstrong and Bea Arthur for the lesbian community in Wellington. It is a registered charity that welcomes bequests and donations to enable it to assist lesbian communities in the Wellington region.
