LILAC News for February 2020

With a new Collective full of great ideas, LILAC moves forward into its 25th year of service to the lesbian community.

Over the next 12 months there will be a series of new activities, events and additional resources.
To start on a very high note, LILAC welcomes the return of author Julie Glamuzina who, on Wednesday, 26 February will be discussing her forthcoming book Spies and Lies
Spies and Lies is about Dr Hjelmar von Dannevill, the only woman incarcerated on Matiu/Somes Island during World War 1. Supposedly a spy, but ultimately imprisoned because of her relationship with another woman, she was in fact a woman of her times, a lesbian, global traveller, health advocate – and much more.

“I’ll talk about the sources and some of the areas of interest, for example, British colonial activities in India, the suffrage movement, women’s fight to practice medicine, anti-German racism in New Zealand and the actions of the Women’s Anti-German League.”

“My research into her has involved searching various sources – including archival holdings, newspaper accounts, immigration records, Coroner’s Inquest reports – as well as investigating multiple topics and themes to place her in a global context. I’ll mention some of the issues I encountered.”
There will be drinks and nibbles from 6.30pm with the presentation from Julie at 7pm
Koha admission at the LILAC venue 187 Willis Street. It is on the second floor but there is a lift.
We look forward to seeing you there.
This event is part of the Wellington Pride Festival | Tu Whakahihi e Te Whanganui-a-Tara
LILAC gratefully acknowledges the invaluable financial support we receive from the Armstrong and Arthur Charitable Trust for Lesbians.

The A&A Trust  commemorates the support of Bette Armstrong and Bea Arthur for the lesbian community in Wellington. It is a registered charity that welcomes bequests and donations to enable it to assist lesbian communities in the Wellington region.
